BANJUL, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Three Gambians soldiers were left injured during a brief firing exchange with the ECOWAS Mission in the Gambia (ECOMIG) in the home village of the former President Yahya Jammeh on Thursday, spokesperson of the Gambia Armed Forces confirmed to Xinhua.
"We have heard about the incident this morning and the Gambia Armed Forces immediately deployed a fact-finding team led by the deputy Chief of Defence Staff Lt. General Yankuba Drammeh to ascertain the cause of firing," Lt. Col. Omar Bojang said.
However, Bojang said the team were able to understand that the conflict was caused by misunderstanding between the two forces.
"During the firing exchange, three Gambian soldiers sustained injuries and but we are yet to ascertain what causes the misunderstanding," he said.
He said the two authorities are tasked to put up a joint board of inquiry to ascertain the cause of the gunshots, stating that when such things happen each side will narrate stories that will clear them.
The ECOMIG forces first landed on the Gambian soil on the mid night of January 19 sent by the orders of ECOWAS to forcefully remove Jammeh who refused to leave power for the elected president Adama Barrow in December.
According to President Barrow, the ECOMIG forces will remain in the Gambia for six months in order to help the country to regain its democratic values.
