VIENNA, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Austrian fruit and wine farmers have been preparing for a frosty evening which will last till Friday, with fears about damage to their harvest similar to that of last year.

Secretary General of the Agricultural Chamber Josef Plank said Thursday that in light of many trees and plants currently in full bloom, "we can only hope that it will not be too bad," the Austria Press Agency reported.

The late frost in 2016 caused major damage, some farmers seeing their entire harvest wiped out. Warm conditions this year have led to many crops blooming up to two weeks earlier than the average, leaving them particularly susceptible to a cold snap.

Plank said farmers are going to try to fight the conditions "with all possible means,"but acknowledged that even with the latest technology and know-how, efforts would be powerless against heavy frost.
