ACCRA, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Two persons were shot dead while two others were injured in Ghana following renewed communal clash at Nkonya, a town in the Volta Region located some 226 km east of the national capital, the police said here Thursday.

Chief Superintendent Prosper Ahwirigya, Kpando Divisional Police Commander, told the media the incident occurred between 7 and 8 pm on Wednesday, April 19.

The Police Commander said the perpetrators were alleged to be from Alavanyo, who are neighbors with the people of Nkonya.

"It was an attack from Alavanyo, according to the soldiers on the ground who were monitoring events. They said the attack was from the rival side, Alavanyo," Ahwirigya said.

The assemblyman for Nkonya Ntumda, Sylvester Akompi, gave account of what happened in the area.

"Five people went to farm, they are palm wine tappers. They were tapping palm wine between Nkonya and Alavanyo, precisely Nkonya Ahenkro. In the course of doing their work, it rained a bit and on their way home, a group of people appeared with guns and started shooting at them.

"Two people managed to hide somewhere, while three people were shot. One died instantly; he would be about 40 or 41 years," Akompi said.

Residents in the area are reported to be living in extreme fear and have fled their homes.

The incident occurred hours after the country's Interior Minister Ambrose Dery announced that it had reviewed a curfew in the area from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. each day.

The Nkonya and Alavanyo have been involved in a longstanding land dispute dating back to colonial times.
