SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Over 40 residential and commercial establishments were gutted Thursday in a devastating fire in Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The fire broke out at a main market in Bhatyas Bhalessa of Doda district, about 270 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

No loss of life was reported in the incident.

"In a devastating incident today at least 32 business establishments and eight residential houses were gutted here," a senior government official told Xinhua via telephone.

"Most of the structures were made of wood because of which the fire caused large scale destruction."

The officials of region's fire and emergency services department said it took several hours for them to contain fire and douse the flames.

The cause of fire was not known. Police said they were ascertaining reasons behind the fire.

The region's Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has expressed grief over the fire incident.

Last week, 32 residential and commercial establishments were gutted in a similar incident in the district.
