JAKARTA, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian prosecutors on Thursday sought two years probation for Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama who is on trial over blasphemy charges.

Basuki was declared as suspect in a legal case related to the blasphemous statement against the Koran that he made in September last year during his official visit in northern Jakarta.

Waves of massive demonstrations staged by Muslim hardliner groups occurred later in Jakarta in response to Basuki's statement with part of them marred with violence and vandalism.

The prosecution stated by the prosecutor entitles Basuki for not to get imprisoned immediately. He remains free from prison, but if he commits other misdeeds with legal consequences within two years, he would be jailed for one year plus the sentence period from his latest legal violation.

Basuki lost his chance to extend his gubernatorial post on Wednesday after he was defeated by his rival Anies Baswedan, former education minister in President Joko Widodo's government.
