Death toll climbs to 6 in NW China landslide

XI'AN, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Three women and three children were confirmed dead in a landslide that knocked down a residential building in northwest China's Shaanxi Province Monday, local authorities said Wednesday.

By 4:43 a.m. Wednesday, rescuers had retrieved the dead bodies of the three "missing" residents, including two women and a boy, the emergency rescue headquarters in Baihe County said in a statement.

The rescue work ended at 5 a.m.

A seven-story residential building in the mountainous Maoping Township of Baihe County collapsed in a rainstorm-triggered landslide at 11:58 a.m. Monday, according to the local government.

The building was home to 39 people from 11 families. Seven people were trapped in the debris.

Late Monday, a 60-year-old woman was pulled from the rubbles. The only survivor among the seven trapped, she is still in hospital.

A woman and two children, a boy and a girl, were confirmed dead early Tuesday.
