TIRANA, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Roughly 45.5 percent of Albanians live in conditions of poverty, local media reported Friday citing the latest statistics from the World Bank for 2016.
According to the WB report, approximately half of Albanians live on less than five dollars a day.
However, the report noted that although such figure still remained very high, the poverty rate in Albania has shown a slight downward trend in recent years.
According to the World Bank, the poverty rate has dropped by 1.7 percentage points in three years, from a level of 47.2 percent in 2013.
Improvement of economic growth and employment indicators seems to have given a slight effect on the reduction of poverty, according to the World Bank.
Meanwhile, referring to Albania's institute of statistics, it turns out that around 607,000 pensioners and 82,000 families live on social assistance.
