EU aviation agency recommends portable electronic devices be carried in cabin

BRUSSELS, April 6 (Xinhua) -- The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on Wednesday recommended airlines and aircraft operators to transport portable electronic devices (PEDs) containing lithium batteries in passenger cabins.

According to the agency, PEDs containing lithium batteries should preferably be carried in passenger cabins, on the person or in the carry-on baggage because this would enable the crew to react fast in case an incident involving such PED occurs.

If the carriage of PEDs in the cabin is prohibited, this will lead to an increase of the number of PEDs carried in the cargo compartment. And airlines and aircraft operators should take this into account in the safety risk assessment.

EASA recommended that PEDs placed in checked baggage be completely switched off and have to be protected from damage by applying suitable packaging or casing.

Carriage of spare batteries, power banks and portable electronic smoking devices in checked baggage is currently forbidden by the International Civil Aviation Organization.
