Bangladesh earns 26 bln USD in exports in 3Qs of current fiscal

DHAKA, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's export income in the first three quarters of the current 2016-17 fiscal year (July 2016-June 2017) grew 3.97 percent to nearly 26 billion U.S. dollars, an official said Thursday.

The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) official told Xinhua that the country earned a total of 25,946.02 million U.S. dollars from exports in July to March period of the current 2016-17 fiscal year.

Quoting the latest EPB data, the official, who preferred to be unnamed, said export earnings for March were 3,052 million U.S. dollars, 9.83 percent higher than that in the same month last year.

Overall export growth dipped as ready-made garment industry, which make up three-fourths of the country's total exports a year, continued to remain in the doldrums.

In the first nine months of the current fiscal year, the official said, knitwear garment export grew merely 4.85 percent to 10,143.55 million U.S. dollars while woven garments increased 0.18 percent to 10,785.28 million U.S. dollars, compared to the same period of last fiscal year.

Apart from garment, the EPB data showed that many of the major exportable items, including jute and jute goods and leather and leather products, pharmaceuticals also had good performance in the July-March period.

Bangladesh exports inched up 10 percent to 34.24 billion U.S. dollars in the last 2015-16 fiscal year.

The Bangladesh government has set its export target at 34.26 billion U.S. dollars for the current fiscal year.
