SUVA, April 5 (Xinhua) -- About 6,000 people are expected to be assisted when Fiji starts work on its third phase of the Help for Homes initiative next Tuesday.
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Fiji's minister for economy, said Wednesday on state owned radio Fiji Broadcasting Corporation that the government had set aside 25 million Fijian dollars (11 million U.S. dollars) for this work.
Khaiyum said areas to be covered include Tavua, Ba, Lautoka, the Yasawa group, Cakaudrove and Bua.
About 6,000 people are expected to be assisted in this phase alone.
The category five tropical cyclone Winston that hit Fiji in February 2016 was the worst disaster in recorded history.
According to the United Nations, 44 people were killed by the storm that affected 40 percent of the population. Fiji's current population stands at about 850,000 people.
The massive disaster left more than 31,000 houses damaged or destroyed across the island nation.
