Policeman killed, 10 wounded in grenade attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, April 2 (Xinhua) -- An Indian policeman was killed and 10 others including three paramilitary troopers of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were wounded Sunday in a grenade blast in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The blast took place during evening at Nowhatta area of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Militants this evening threw a grenade towards joint party of police and paramilitary troopers here in Nowhatta, wounding eight policemen and three CRPF personnel," Rajesh Yadav, Srinagar based spokesman of CRPF told Xinhua. "Of the wounded personnel, one policeman succumbed to his wounds and others have been hospitalised."

According to Yadav, the attack took place when the contingents were withdrawing from the daylong duty.

"The three CRPF personnel have been admitted in army base hospital here," he said.

The attack created panic in the area.

A militant group Tehreek ul Mujahideen in a statement to Srinagar based news-gathering agencies has claimed responsibility of the attack.

On Saturday four Indian army troopers were wounded in the outskirts of the city after militants attacked their convoy.

Separatist movement and guerilla war challenging New Delhi's rule is going on in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Gunfight between militants and Indian troops takes place intermittently across the region.
