XI'AN, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Former vice chair of the government of northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Bai Xueshan, stood trial Friday on charges of corruption at a court in the northwestern province of Shaanxi.

Bai was tried at the Intermediate People's Court in Xi'an, capital city of Shaanxi Province.

The people's procuratorate of Xi'an alleged that from 1994 to 2015, Bai took advantage of his various posts to offer assistance to entities and individuals in land-related procedures, project approvals and contracting and adjustment of positions.

In return, Bai accepted bribes worth about 38.87 million yuan (5.63 million U.S. dollars), prosecutors said.

Bai made a statement to the court in which he pled guilty and expressed remorse.

The court has adjourned to decide on sentencing.

More than 50 people, including Bai's relatives, legislators, political advisors, journalists and members of the public, were present at the open trial.
