TIRANA, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Albanian government has approved a national action plan to combat cultivation and trafficking of cannabis for 2017-2020, deputy Prime Minister Niko Peleshi told a press conference Wednesday.

According to Peleshi, the action plan was a strategic document which would coordinate and lead all inter-institutional efforts in the fight against trafficking and cultivation of cannabis plants across the country.

The plan, drafted by local and foreign experts in the field, "clearly envisages all needed steps and measures to prevent cultivation and trafficking of cannabis," a phenomenon that has become a major concern in Albania, Peleshi told reporters.

Starting this year, State Police, law enforcement agencies and all relevant institutions will engage in a country-wide and closely-coordinated crackdown on this phenomenon, he said.

In the end, he noted that the Action Plan finalized a process launched by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama with the strong support of partners in the international community.
