JAKARTA, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia planned to hold a grand international sailing event of Sail Sabang later this year in waters around the nation's westernmost tip of Weh island in Aceh province's district of Sabang, expected to be catered by hundreds of yachters and delegations of several countries.

The grand tourism event of 2017 Sail Sabang was slated from November 28 to December 5, continuing the previous similar events held in eastern and central regions' waters, including in Bunaken, Tomini and Karimata in 2009, 2015 and 2016.

Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan said the option to take Sabang was considered on the facts the district has remarkable coral reef, has been a favorite to yachters in world and is close to top maritime destinations of Langkawi, Phuket and Singapore.

"Sabang also hosted international yacht rally and race called Sabang Regatta several times, were highly praised by international yachters communities," Luhut said on the sidelines of a coordination meeting to prepare the event on Wednesday.

The senior minister said four main locations would be set to host the event themed "Sabang, the international hub of maritime tourism", comprised of Sabang Bay, Sabang Fair, Gapang Resort and 0 Km site.

President Joko Widodo was scheduled to attend the peak session in the event scheduled in Pasiran, Sabang Bay, the minister added.

Tourism Ministry's Deputy Minister for Destination and Tour Industry Development Dadang Rizki Ratman said yachters participating in Sail Sabang would come from Australia, Singapore and several European countries.

He added that the flag off of Sail Sabang would be conducted in Darwin, Australia in July. Before reaching Sabang, yachts taking part in the event would make stopovers in several Indonesia's destinations including in Kupang, Lombok, Banyuwangi, Karimunjawa, Belitung and Bintan.

"Some 100 yachts are expected to reach Sabang during the event period from Nov. 28 to Dec.5," Dadang said in the meeting.

He added that tall ship parade would be featured in the peak session, to be participated by tall ships from Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.
