BELGRADE, March 28 (Xinhua) -- German pharmaceutical trader Phoenix Group on Tuesday opened a regional distribution center for West Balkans in the industrial zone in Simanovci, near the Serbian capital Belgrade.

The move will make Belgrade the third biggest distribution center of pharmaceuticals and other medicinal products for the Phoenix Group in southeast Europe, after Prague and Warsaw, according to the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The center, attracting an investment of around 3 million euros (3.2 million U.S. dollars), confirms Serbia's logistical importance as a regional hub, said Marko Cadez, president of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The CEO of Phoenix Group Oliver Windholz said that the project ensures access to regionally connected markets in southeast Europe.

Phoenix Group is present in 26 European countries with more than 150 distribution centers and 200 pharmacies. It employs around 34,000 people and annually distributes around 260 million packages of pharmaceuticals to a market of some 120 million consumers.
