HANOI, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam reported a total of 4,800 traffic accidents in the first three months this year, down 175 cases or 3.51 percent year-on-year, according to the country's National Committee for Traffic Safety on Tuesday.
Over the period, traffic accidents in Vietnam killed 2,100 people and injured 3,800 others, respectively down 3.65 percent and 15.19 percent against the same period last year.
In the first quarter of 2017, local traffic police handled 986,714 cases of traffic violations nationwide, with total administrative fine reaching around 593 billion Vietnamese dong (26.35 million U.S. dollars). Some 88,000 drivers had their driving licenses revoked for breaking traffic rules.
In March alone, the country saw 1,347 traffic accidents with 544 deaths and 1,175 injuries, respectively down by 20, 59 and 20 cases year-on-year.
This year, Vietnam aims to reduce road and railway accidents by 5 to 10 percent compared to 2016, and at least 5 percent of serious accidents involving railways, inland waterways and coaches, said the Committee.
