4 killed, 700 houses damaged due to rain, thunderstorm in NE India

NEW DELHI, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rain accompanied with thunderstorm and high-speed winds Saturday killed four people including a woman and injured two others in India's northeastern state of Tripura, officials said.

According to police, three people were killed and two others injured in West Tripura when a vehicle carrying them overturned after being hit by a gusty storm.

"The driver lost the control over the vehicle after being hit by a gusty wind," a police official said. "The two injured were hospitalised immediately."

The deceased were identified as labourers working at a brick kiln.

In another incident one woman died after being crushed under a falling tree. According to police, the storm uprooted a big tree in Abhoynagar area and crushed a woman, who was waiting for bus under it.

India's official broadcaster - All India Radio (AIR) said the storm damaged 700 houses besides snapping electricity supply in four districts.

"Heavy rain and squally wind with speed of 50 km per hour swept away many parts of the state in the early hours of the day, causing damage to kuchha houses in Unakoti, Dhalai, Sepahijala and a part of West Tripura districts," the broadcaster said.

The Meteorological department officials have predicted rain and thunderstorm for next two days.
