VIENNA, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Austrians use bicycles to travel a total 1.9 billion kilometers each year to conduct their daily activities, the Traffic Club Austria (VCOe) stated in a press release on Friday.

Calculated on the basis of statistics provided by the Ministry of Transport, the VCOe found the distance travelled, often to go shopping, school, work, or to the train station, also saves 320,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

It further found that six to 14-year-olds have the highest use of bicycles, making up ten percent of their travel for their daily activities. This is followed by the 65-and-over age bracket, where bicycle riding makes up eight percent of their daily means of transport, while 20 to 34-year-olds come in last on only four percent.

The VCOe pointed out that bicycle riding is also ideal for health, and can contribute to the 30 minutes of daily exercise recommended by the World Health Organization.
