ABUJA, March 23 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian police on Thursday allayed fears of people in the country's economic hub Lagos and the diplomatic communities, saying there was no bomb planted in the United States of America's consular office in the coastal city.

Lagos State police chief Fatai Owoseni told reporters an anti-bomb team was dispatched to the U.S. consular office following a distress call early Thursday that there was a strange bag suspected to be bomb abandoned inside a vehicle at the premises.

According to the senior police officer, the team of policemen which removed the bag from the vehicle discovered, after scanning, that all items inside were medical tools.

The bag contained scissors, bandages and plaster, he said.

Normal activities had resumed at the U.S. consular office since the removal of the bag.

Owoseni said an investigation is underway to ascertain the owner of the bag and why it was abandoned. Enditem
