Kenya's bourse benchmark index hits new high on large stocks raise

NAIROBI, March 23 (Xinhua) -- A rise in share prices of several large stocks helped push Kenya's Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) 20 Share Index 46 points up to close Thursday at a new high of 3,082.85.

The surge is the highest in recent months as the index sustained an upward trend mainly boosted by Safaricom, Standard Chartered Bank, British America Tobacco (BAT) and Kenya Airways, all which went up by between 1 percent and 9 percent.

Similarly, the All Share Index (NASI) rose 1.52 points to stand at 129.90 while the NSE 25 Share Index swelled 23.61 points to stand at 3,427.14.

Safaricom, normally an investors' favourite at the bourse, traded at a new high of 0.18 U.S. dollars and moved 9.2 million shares.

Kenya Reinsurance was the day's second best moved stock, exchanging 2.7 million shares at 0.19 dollars while BAT 1.5 million at 0.10 dollars.

Longhorn Kenya and Cooperative Bank closed the list of the day's top traded stocks at 1.1 million and 685,600 shares at 0.04 dollars and 0.14 dollars.

Some 18 million shares valued at 3.1 million dollars were traded during the session, down from 26 million shares that were valued at 5.8 million dollars posted Wednesday.

The bond market turnover increased to 24 million dollars compared to 18 million dollars posted the previous session. Enditem
