LONDON, March 23 (Xinhua) -- The Islamic State has claimed it was behind Wednesday's London attack, the ISIS-related Amaq news agency said Thursday.

According to Sky News, the ISIS news agency said in a tweet that "a soldier for the Islamic State carried out the operation in answer to calls to target the people of coalition states".

The phrasing suggested the attacker was inspired by Islamic State, and had not been directly trained by it, Sky reported.

British Prime Minister Theresa May told the parliament on Thursday that the perpetrator was British born and was known to the police and security services.

May said the attacker was a "peripheral" figure who had once been investigated by British security service over concerns about violent extremism.
