KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Insider attack claimed the lives of nine police officers in the northern Kunduz province of Afghanistan on Thursday, police said.

"A personnel of local police apparently affiliated with the Taliban group brutally gunned down nine members of local police in a checkpoint in Kocha-e-Qazaq locality in the southern edge of provincial capital Kunduz city early today morning and made his good escape," a police official told Xinhua but refused to be named.

Meantime, senior police officer in Kunduz province General Shir Aziz Kamawal confirmed the bloody incident and said that "operations are underway in the area" to bring to justice those behind the deadly offensive.

Local police is community police that made up of villagers to defend the areas where the presence of government's uniform forces is slim.

Taliban militants who are active in parts of the relatively troubled Kunduz province haven't commented.

A similar incident in the southern Zabul province on March 11 claimed the lives of eight local police personnel.
