SUVA, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Fiji sent its message of condolence and solidarity to Britain on Thursday following the vehicle and knife assaults near the Houses of Parliament in London.
In his message to British Prime Minister Theresa May, Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama expressed his shock and condolences.
"We are especially shocked by this brazen assault on the 'mother of all parliaments' and the seat of Britain's democracy. The news came as our own parliament met in Suva today. And my fellow MPs join me in sending a strong message of sympathy and solidarity to our British counterparts," Bainimarama told May in the message.
"Rest assured that Fiji stands shoulder to shoulder with the United Kingdom to our determination to defeat the terrorist threat. Our warm friendship is rooted not only in our historical ties but in our shared values. And we stand ready to support you in any way we can," Bainimarama said, adding that "Our thoughts and prayers are with the British government and British people at this time."
Four people were killed, including the attacker and a stabbed police officer, and at least 20 were injured in the attack in London on Wednesday afternoon local time.
Fiji gained independence on Oct. 10, 1970 from British colonial rule.
