Spanish Ibex-35 stock exchange withstands market pressure to close with small gains

MADRID, March 22 (Xinhua) -- The Ibex-35 stock exchange in Madrid withstood a day of losses in other European markets to close on Wednesday with gains of 0.17 percent.

The Ibex-35 closed trading on 10,229.30 points, after opening the day on 10,211.90 points, although it's value fell 10,092.80 points, or around 1 percent, during the day before recovering thanks to the performances of Spain's main banks which saw Bankia shares gain 1.12 percent, Caixabank 1.04 percent, the Banco Santander, 0.42 percent and BBVA, 0.41 percent.

Telecommunications giant Telefonica also enjoyed a good day in which share prices rose by 0.77 percent, although the day's best performers were Grifols, whose share rose by 2.67 percent in value, while energy companies Gas Natural and Iberdrola saw increases of 1.28 and 1.06 percent respectively

Wednesday's main loser was airline group AIG with a 2.72 percent drop in its share price.

Meanwhile there was a 0.38 percent increase in the Spanish risk premium, which closed Wednesday on 131.1 points, while interest on the 10-year-bond ended the day on 1.72 percent. Enditem
