PHNOM PENH, March 22 (Xinhua) -- An endangered Asian elephant had died after an electrical pole collapsed and electrocuted the animal, Nup Thet, a ranger at Wildlife Alliance in Cambodia, said on Wednesday.

The male-elephant, weighing more than two tons, was electrocuted Tuesday night in a jungle in southwestern Koh Kong province, three km from the Kirirom National Park, he told Xinhua.

According to a Wildlife Alliance statement posted on its Facebook page, the gentle giant is survived by a wife and two calves.

In July last year, a young male-Asian elephant died in eastern Cambodia's Mondolkiri province after sustaining a severe foot wound caused by a snare trap.

Cambodia is home to over 500 wild elephants, according to the forestry administration.
