ISTANBUL, March 22 (Xinhua) -- One person died and nine others were hospitalized in Istanbul after a housewife added a cheap synthetic drug into barbecued meat, mistaking it for thyme, Turkish media reported on Wednesday.
According to the Hurriyet daily, the housewife Aysel K. found a bag full of bonzai, a synthetic drug, in her garden while collecting bushes for barbecue.
As she thought the substance was mountain thyme, she barbecued all the meat with bonzai to be served to her relatives from the capital city of Ankara, the daily said.
Aysel's daughter-in-law, Yeliz D., who had not had her portion then, noticed the others were behaving strangely by making meaningless gestures soon after having their meals and immediately called ambulances.
Aysel's 55-year-old brother-in-law died later in hospital, and police were trying to identify the person who left the bonzai bag in the garden, the report said.
