MADRID, March 21 (Xinhua) -- The search for two fishermen who have been missing since Monday afternoon continued on Tuesday near Barcelona, local media reported.

The two fishermen have been identified as 34-year-old Moroccan, Mfeddal Sarghini and 37-year-old Senegalese, Cheikhou Mane.

Tuesday morning saw a rescue boat positioned over the scene of the accident with rescue services using a robot submarine to try and find the two men.

They were on a small fishing boat the El Fairell along with the other two Xavi and Ricard Huguert, when it was hit by a Russian merchant ship Midvolga 2 which was leaving, around a mile and a half from the port of Barcelona on Monday afternoon.

The small fishing boat sank almost immediately, with Xavi and Ricard Huguert rescued by the crew of the Russian ship and taken to hospital. Their condition is reported as "not serious."

Despite being relatively close to the coast, the El Fairell sank in 170 meters of water, which is too deep for divers from Spain's Civil Guard rescue services to reach. It is not known whether the two missing men were trapped inside the boat and whether they were wearing life jackets.

Meanwhile, the Catalan regional government has got into contact with the Russian consulate to analyze the incident.
