Policeman injured as census team attacked in NW Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, March 21 (Xinhua) -- A policeman was injured when some unknown militants opened fire at a census team in Pakistan's northwest Charsadda district on Tuesday morning, local Urdu media reported.

Dawn News said that the incident occurred when the census team was working in Mandani area of Charsadda, the district in the country's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The policemen, accompanying the census officials, shot one of the attackers injured in the retaliatory attack.

The injured militant was later arrested and shifted to some unknown place, but his identity has not been revealed yet.

Pakistan's sixth population and housing census started in two phases on March 15, after a hiatus of 19 years.

The census teams are being provided security by Pakistan Army, police and paramilitary troops including Frontier Constabulary, Frontier Corps and Levies force in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The first phase of the census will continue until April 15 and the second phase will start on April 25 and conclude on May 25.
