DUBAI, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Passengers at Dubai International Airport were welcomed Monday with giant smileys and treated to a special welcome with cupcakes, chocolates and flowers, on the occasion of the International Day of Happiness, the UAE state news agency WAM reported.

The celebrations were organized in line with the national happiness and positivity program launched by UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, and led by the Ministry of State for Happiness and the Dubai Smart Government.

Officials from a number of government departments as well as Dubai Airports came together to support the initiative and help achieve Dubai's goal to add happiness and positivity in government policies and services, and instill values of happiness and positivity as a lifestyle in the UAE and beyond.

At DXB terminal three, Dubai's government-controlled Emirates Airline marked International Day of Happiness with small surprises for its customers and employees.

Across the boarding gates of terminal three which is solely used by Emirates and it strategic partner carrier Qantas from Australia, the biggest airline in the Middle East surprised unsuspecting passengers travelling from and transiting in Dubai with Business Class upgrades.

HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, said in an e-mailed statement many find happiness in constantly challenging themselves to achieve new goals, learning new skills, or nurturing strong relationships in their personal and professional lives.

"Most times, all it really takes is to simply share a smile. It's one of the most powerful human gestures. We're fortunate that our leaders in the UAE fully understand the power of happy people," he said.
