Venezuela's Supreme Court denies conflict with National Assembly

Source: Xinhua   2017-03-20 06:52:23

CARACAS, March 19 (Xinhua) -- The president of Venezuela's Supreme Court (TSJ), Maikel Moreno, dismissed on Sunday that there was a conflict between the TSJ and the National Assembly, controlled by the opposition Democratic Unity Roundtable.

During an interview with the private Televen station, Moreno said "it cannot be said there is a power struggle" when the TSJ rules in favor or against an institution.

The TSJ has been accused by the opposition of heavily favoring the government of President Nicolas Maduro.

But according to Moreno, the decisions of the court "do not attack a specific sector" but seek to ensure the country" is committed to a democratic, social and fair State."

He added that in recent years, there had been attempts to "ignore" Venezuela's institutions, in response to which the TSJ has acted as a "guarantor" of the country.

As part of this, on Saturday, Moreno announced he had created a commission to "study the attacks" against the TSJ by Luis Almagro, secretary-general of the Organization of American States (OAS).

Almagro recently released a report that charts Venezuela's difficult situation and suggests the country should be suspended from the OAS, in part due to what the report calls the TSJ's bias towards the government.

In 2016, the judicial and legislative branches saw a mounting rivalry that left many of the Assembly's acts toothless.

The TSJ maintains that the Assembly's rulings are invalid since it has refused to unseat three deputies which the court said won their seats through electoral fraud.

The Assembly has also refused to recognize the authority of the TSJ, accusing it of acting outside the Constitution.
