DUBAI, March 18 (Xinhua) -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is ranked first for the highest "fiber-to-the-home (FTTH)" penetration in 2016 among all its global counterparts, UAE telecom provider Etisalat said Saturday in an e-mailed statement, citing industry body FTTH Council.

According to FTTH report, the UAE had a FTTH coverage of 93.7 percent in 2016, followed by Qatar (87.9 percent), Singapore (85.4 percent), South Korea (79.8 percent), Hong Kong (73.7 percent) and Japan (53.9 percent), said Etisalat, the most valuable company in the UAE.

UAE was shortlisted in the category of countries with a FTTH penetration of more than 40 percent. There were 11 countries in the category.

"Etisalat has worked in line with this strategy investing more than 28 billion dirhams (7.63 billion U.S. dollars) in the network infrastructure," said Saleh Al-Abdooli, the chief executive officer of Etisalat Group in Abu Dhabi.

Meanwhile, Etisalat's eLife TV boasts the country's widest portfolio of on-demand films and TV series with 150 TV channels in high definition.

Etisalat's local rival Du from Dubai has also invested in fiber broadband technology by cooperating with Finland's Nokia to increase the speed of internet services in the Gulf state, according to a company public statement released in December 2016.
