NEW DELHI, March 18 (Xinhua) -- An Indian car racing champion Ashwin Sundar and his wife were burnt to death Saturday after their car crashed into a roadside tree and engulfed in fire, police said.

The accident took place early Saturday in Pattinapakkam area in Chennai, the capital city of southern state of Tamil Nadu.

"Early today at around 1:51 a.m. (local time) a professional car racer of international repute Ashwin Sundar and his wife were killed in a car accident here," a police official said.

"Ashwin who drove the BMW car lost control over it and reportedly rammed into a roadside tree and caught in between the wall and a tree."

Report said impact of crash ignited fire in the car, leading to the couple's death. According to officials, the firefighters doused the fire in a half-an-hour operation and retrieved charred bodies.

"The firefighters received the distress call but no sooner they reached the spot, the couple had already charred in the leaping blaze that has engulfed the car," the police official said.

Police officials have sent the bodies for post-mortem and registered a case.

A video of the burning car was posted on social media by eyewitnesses who said they were unable to rescue the couple due to the intense heat from blaze.

Ashwin, 27, had lifted several titles in the car racing. His wife Niveditha, 26, was a doctor in a private hospital.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

Global Road Safety Report 2015 released by WHO last year however said India accounts for more than 200,000 deaths annually due to road accidents.
