RIO DE JANEIRO, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The number of cases of yellow fever surpassed 400 in Brazil, as the disease spread to the state of Rio de Janeiro, the third most populated and the most touristic area, the government said on Thursday.
This week, one yellow fever death and one infection were registered in Rio de Janeiro.
The latest figures from the Ministry of Health show 137 people have died from the disease nationwide, while another 424 cases have been confirmed; another 933 are in testing.
The deaths occurred in 80 cities, 49 of them in the southeast state of Minas Gerais, the second most populous state and the worst hit by the current outbreak.
The government has sent 13.9 million vaccinations to states at risk, including Rio de Janeiro.
Official figures show the last outbreak of yellow fever in Brazilian urban centers took place in 1942, in the state of Acre.
