GENEVA, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) reported Thursday that Swiss on average are eating excessive meat but inadequate dairy products.

The FOPH-mandated study, which surveyed almost 2,000 adults across the confederation, finds that an adult in Switzerland consumes on average 780 grams of meat every week, 540 grams more than the recommended amount by health experts.

But at the same time, Swiss people are not eating or drinking enough milk or milk-derived products, with results showing two portions of dairy products are consumed every day instead of the ideal three.

At the other end of the spectrum, results show that adults consume four times the recommended amount of sugary and savoury snacks as well as fatty products including butter, creams and sauces.

The report revealed that Swiss adults drink an average of 1.7 litres of tea, coffee and water per day, which is within the 1.5 to 2 litre guidelines set by nutritional authorities.

And 35 percent of those questioned said they never cook at lunchtime, while 20 percent never cook dinner.

FOPH said that these results will help guide Switzerland's 2017-2024 nutritional strategy by helping to identify and correct detrimental eating habits.
