BRUSSELS, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission on Thursday published a report on a rapid alert system for non-food dangerous products.
The Commission explained this alert system for non-food dangerous products ensures that information about dangerous products withdrawn from the market and/or recalled from consumers anywhere in Europe is quickly circulated between member states and the European Commission, so that appropriate action can be taken everywhere in the Europe Union (EU).
According to the report, in 2016, the number of notifications of consumer products posing a risk to health and safety was 2,044 similar to the results of 2015. Reporting activity of follow-up measures on notifications increased to 3,824 in that time period.
In 2016, all participating countries, except Liechtenstein, notified measures taken against dangerous products. Among them, Germany, Spain and France registered the most notifications. The number of notifications of these countries were 319, 224 and 199 respectively, said the report.
This system was established by the general product safety directive and became fully operational in 2004. The most common measures are: ban or stop on sales, withdrawal of a dangerous product from the market or recall from consumers, and import rejection by the customs authorities.
The system covers dangerous non-food products intended for consumers and for professionals which pose a serious risk to their health and safety. A total of 31 countries participate in the system.
