Vietnamese boat seized for allegedly encroaching Brunei waters: police

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, March 16 (Xinhua) -- A Vietnamese fishing boat has been seized and 10 crew detained after the boat was allegedly found encroaching Brunei's territorial waters and carrying out fishing activities.

According to a statement released by the Royal Brunei Police Force on Thursday, Royal Brunei Navy ship intercepted the fishing boat with the registration PY90541TS in Brunei's waters for carrying out fishing activities illegally using longlines fishing.

A search also found some catches in the fish storage compartment.

The 10 detained Vietnamese crew, aged between 18 and 50, were transferred to the Marine Police for further investigation.

According to local laws, if convicted, the captain of the Vietnamese boat will face up to five years' imprisonment with a maximum 100,000 Brunei dollars (71,271 U.S. dollars) in fines while each crew member will face up to one year's imprisonment with a maximum 2500 Brunei dollars in fines.
