S. African stocks close marginally weaker Wednesday

JOHANNESBURG, March 15 (Xinhua) -- The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) closed weaker on Wednesday, as the market digested the decision on interest rates by the United States Federal Reserve.

The JSE all share was down 1.12 percent at 51,636.57 points and the blue-chip top 40 lost 0.14 percent.

The South Africa rand was trading at R13.03 to the U.S. dollar, R17.29 to the British pound and R15.88 to the euro at 5 p.m. (CAT).

Gold miners led the losers on the local market, down 1.64 percent.

Financials closed 0.07 higher while banks gained 0.25 percent.

Diversified miners all gained, led by Glencore, up 2.39 percent to R51.5 after it reported on Tuesday that it had sold significant stakes in its assets, so it would become a global focused-zinc miner.

British American Tobacco shed 2.68 percent to R805. Harmony gold was down 5.54 percent to R28.48 and Gold Fields down 1.55 percent to R40.52.

Old Mutual lost 1.47 percent to R35.48. Enditem
