VALLETTA, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Malta recorded the highest employment growth of all European Union (EU) member states in the fourth quarter of 2016 when compared with the previous quarter.
The statistics published by Eurostat on Wednesday showed that between October and December 2016 Malta registered a growth in employment of 5.1 percent, a growth of 1.9 percent over the previous quarter.
Malta was followed by Luxembourg and Cyprus, both registering a growth of 0.9 percent.
Eurostat statistics showed that the number of people employed increased by 0.2 percent in the EU in the fourth quarter of 2016 compared with the previous quarter. Over the whole year 2016, employment in the EU has increased by 1.2 percent compared with 2015.
All but four countries in the EU registered an increase in employment. Decreases in employment were observed in Estonia, Greece, Lithuania and Croatia.
