Myanmar's military overruns Kokang armed group's hill base: official

YANGON, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's government troops overran a hill base of Kokang's Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) on Wednesday, said a press release of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services.

The government claimed three bodies of the MNDAA and seizure of weapons in attacking the Hill Point-1269 with casualties suffering from the military.

With the occupation of the Hill Point-1269 at 01:00 a.m. local time, the government forces claimed that the key route of Laukkai-Yanlongkyaik has been under control, prompting the possibility of restoring peace in the eastern part of Laukkai.

The release said 57 skirmishes took place between March 6 and March 14 around Point-1088, BP-126 and BP-127 during the government force clearance operation, in which 17 MNDAA bodies and 27 weapons were claimed.

Renewed armed clashes broke out in the Kokang region on March 6 before dawn with MNDAA launching offensive on Laukkai, resulting in dozens of casualties including civilians.

At least five Kokang traffic police and five civilians were killed when the MNDAA attacked police posts and residential area in Laukkai with four other Kokang traffic police being taken hostage.

MNDAA attacked Laukkai with small and heavy weapons , destroying residential buildings, hotels and military camps with vehicles burned.

The Myanmar government troops have been making clearance operation following the incident.

Meanwhile, curfew has been imposed on two townships Laukkai and Kongyang, hit by armed conflicts, with effect from March 10 from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. local time.
