WINDHOEK, March 15 (Xinhua) -- A campaign for a Plastic Free Environment in Namibia was launched in efforts to discourage the use of plastic bags, both in the urban and rural areas.

The Namibia Scientific Society on Wednesday said the concept of a plastic free environment campaign was birthed in August 2016 and on March 9 2017, the campaign was officially launched.

The Society said the campaign in Namibia is an initiative that is in partnership with the Namibian Chamber of Environment and by avid environmentalists that include Sophia Swartz, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources Management, and Elize Shakaela, Miss Earth Namibia.

According to the Society, through collaboration with relevant stakeholders, the campaign aims to achieve two objectives, namely, to discourage the use of plastic bags by developing plastic-free mind and changing educational strategies and also to stimulate discussions around enacting a plastic free legislation.

The group said plastic bags have become so common in Namibia, most probably because they are cheap, easily accessible and somewhat convenient.

"However, the impacts of the use of plastic bags to our environment, agriculture, marine life, livestock and wildlife is hardly stressed with importance," they added.

Meanwhile, the campaign also advances the implementations of the call made by the United Nations Environment Programme to ban plastics as well as the Sustainable Development Goals on clean water, climate action, life below the waters and on land.
