BRUSSELS, March 14 (Xinhua) -- The European Union's statistics agency Tuesday said eurozone's seasonally adjusted industrial production rose by 0.9 percent in January from December, less than the expectation of 2 percent growth.

The slower-than-expected increase raised doubts about whether the recovery really is speeding up.

According to Eurostat, the increase of 0.9 percent is due to production of capital goods rising by 2.8 percent and energy by 1.9 percent, while production of non-durable consumer goods fell by 0.7 percent and both intermediate goods and durable consumer goods by 0.4 percent.

In the 28-nation EU, industrial production was up 0.5 percent based on month and 1.3 percent based on year.

Eurostat also revised up its output figures for December from a drop of 1.6 percent to 1.2 percent on a monthly basis.

"January's rise in eurozone industrial production did not quite reverse December's 1.2 percent decline and suggests that the economy made a slower start to 2017 than the surveys have implied," Capital Economics said.
