ATHENS, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Over half (51.6 percent) of Greek private sector employees today is paid less than 800 euros (851.5 U.S. dollars) per month, as part-time employment has soared in the debt-laden country over years of crisis, according to a survey published on Tuesday.

Up to 68.9 percent of part-time employees work part-time because they cannot find full-time jobs, showed the annual survey conducted by the Labor Institute of the General Confederation of Greek Labor (INE-GSEE), the umbrella union of private sector workers.

With one quarter of the workforce unemployed and 70 percent of the more than one million registered jobless Greeks suffering from chronic unemployment, Greeks have limited choices, according to the INE-GSEE 2016 survey on the Greek labor market.

Data released by the Greek Statistics Authority (ELSTAT) showed the unemployment rate in the last quarter of 2016 stood at 22.6 percent with 3.7 million Greeks working and 1 million people jobless.

Using other indexes and taking into account people who are working part-time for salaries beneath the poverty threshold, INE-GSEE experts estimated the real unemployment rate at 29.6 percent.

The dramatic decline in disposable incomes for households combined with over-taxation and spending cuts in social security since 2010 has led to increased poverty rates. According to the survey, the rate of households unable to fully cover basic needs increased sharply from 28.2 percent in 2010 to 53.4 percent in 2015.

The INE-GSEE survey also highlighted the income gap between private sector employees and public servants. Only 11 percent of public servants are earning less than 800 euros (851.5 U.S. dollars) per month, while more than half of the Greeks working in the public sector are paid more than 1,000 euros (1064 dollars) per month.
