DAMASCUS, March 11 (Xinhua) -- A rebel group called Levant Swords claimed responsibility for the deadly bombings that targeted Iraqi Shiite visitors in the capital Damascus Saturday, killing 44 of them, according to Mayadeen TV.

The group is allied with the rebels' Free Syrian Army (FSA), which is operating in areas in the southern countryside of Damascus, said the report.

The deadly bombings targeted two busses carrying Iraqi Shiite visitors, who were on a pilgrim visit to Damascus, and about to visit Shiite shrines in the Bab al-Saghir cemetery in Damascus.

The bombings left 44 people killed and 100 others wounded.

Images emerging from the site showed blood stains and damaged busses in the area.

Meanwhile, the pro-government al-Watan online newspaper said that the bomb squads succeeded to defuse bombs mounted on a motorcycle that was supposed to go off in that area as well.
