Traffic accidents claim 110 lives in Laos in February

VIENTIANE, March 10 (Xinhua) -- The Traffic Police Department of the Lao Ministry of Public Security said Friday that 529 accidents occurred across the country in February, in which 110 people were killed.

Of those injured, 143 were left in critical conditions, 295 were seriously hurt and 403 people were slightly injured, the department said.

As many as 38 vehicles were written off, 512 sustained moderate damage and 449 vehicles sustained minor damage, causing property damages of over eight billion Lao kip (977,400 U.S. dollars), it said.

According to the department, over 95 percent of accidents were the results of intoxication and reckless driving. The majority of fatalities involved young people.

Lately, two people were killed and six people sustained injuries when a truck and a motorbike travelling in opposite directions collided in Phoukhoun village in Champassak Province's Pakse district on Wednesday.

On the following day, two motorbikes collided head-on in Latsavongxay village in Savannakhet Province's Kaysone Phomvihane district, killing one person. Enditem
