Spanish press hail Barca fightback

Source: Xinhua   2017-03-09 19:24:03

MADRID, March 9 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish press hailed FC Barcelona's historic achievement in overturning a 4-0 first leg deficit against Paris Saint Germain with an incredible 6-1 home win to enter the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

No side had ever come back from such a heavy first leg defeat in the competition and although Barca had led 3-0 after 47 minutes, their dream looked to be over when PSG pulled a goal back on the hour.

However, a dramatic last seven minutes saw Barca score three goals with Sergi Roberto crowning the historic fightback with Barca's sixth goal of the night to send the 98,000 fans in the Camp Nou into raptures and the press into ecstasy.

The Barcelona based newspapers: El Mundo Deportivo and Diario Sport led the praise with El Mundo Deportivo referring to the Barca players as "Heroes!", while Sport went even further proclaiming "You are Legends."

Meanwhile the Catalan daily La Vanguardia headlines "An epic Barca make Champions League history."

Even the pro-Real Madrid sports papers, Marca and Diario AS had to bow down and pay homage to the historic achievement.

Marca proclaimed "Six goals...SIX! For history", while AS was unable to hide it's true pro-Real Madrid colors calling it a "Fightback with doubts" insisting that both the PSG players and the referee were intimidated by the atmosphere in the Camp Nou.

However, even Diario AS' grudging praise was better than the performance by TV journalist Josep Pederol, who began his roundup show, which began minutes before the final whistle on Thursday night with the phrase, "It couldn't be...Barca were close, but the goal from Cavani ended their hopes."
