SYDNEY, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Another prison outbreak has occurred in Papua New Guinea earlier this week, as 24 high risk prisoners escaped from a cell in Helu Province.

The prisoners made their escape on Tuesday night, with local media reporting on Thursday that police commander of Helu Province, Superintendent Michael Welly, said that the prisoners overpowered a guard on overnight duty, before climbing a fence and fleeing.

"There are supposed to be eight policemen on night duty, but only one turned up and seven didn't come to work," Welly said.

The prisoners, according to Welly, were mostly being held for court appearances on charges of murder, and the police commander assured residents every measure will be taken to hunt them down.

Welly was also quick to point out that the cells the men were being held in were not suitable for the amount of prisoners being held, with overcrowding hindering his force's ability to hold captives.

"Right now, the Tari police cell blocks are overcrowded, we have between 22 and 24 men staying in a single cell block, the size of a cell block is 4m by 4m."

Extra security forces have been deployed by authorities to track down the escaped men.
