LISBON, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of Portuguese women protested in central Lisbon on Wednesday to mark the International Women's Day.

Around 200 people attended the protest, with women carrying purple balloons and waving flags that read "It's all about eliminating the wage gap" and "want me free".

A huge banner which organizers hung up on the square's statue read "I won't shut up".

At one point, an organizer of the protest took over the microphone and called for attendees to "make noise in the name of women suffering from gender violence and inequality across the globe."

Protests took place in over 30 countries around the world on Wednesday in solidarity with the Women's March in Washington after U.S. President Donald Trump took office.

International's Women Day has its roots in a protest that took place in 1908, when thousands of garment workers protested in New York to demand equal pay and political rights.
