Argentina says China a "significant player in the world"

BUENOS AIRES, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Argentina's foreign minister Wednesday called China a "significant player in the world" and highlighted that the Asian giant would play an "important role" in Argentina's relations with the world.

Susana Malcorra was participating at a political and economic forum organized by The Economist in Buenos Aires. At a press conference, the minister was asked about ties between China and Argentina, which celebrated 45 years of diplomatic relations on Feb. 19.

"China is a significant player in the world. To deny China's existence as a partner in projects is to deny the existence of a part of the world. As we are seeking to open ourselves intelligently to the world, China is an important factor," she explained.

Earlier, Malcorra said "the ties are at a very good moment...There are numerous topics that we are discussing. We have a mutual interest to maintain this relationship at its highest point."

China now stands as Argentina's second-largest trading partner, and is also the largest importer of Argentinean beef, claiming 40 percent of the country's exports.

Moreover, China is also involved in a series of emblematic projects in the South American country, ranging from hydroelectric, nuclear and clean energy, to railway and housing.
