THE HAGUE, March 8 (Xinhua) -- One week before the Dutch general election, incumbent liberal party VVD gained some ground, opinion polls showed Wednesday.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte's party was projected to win 24-28 seats in the 150-seat House of Representatives, according to Peilingwijzer which combines six different polls into an average.

This is a slight improvement compared with the figures of last Sunday, which had the VVD on 23-27 seats.

Geert Wilders' right-wing populist Party for Freedom PVV is a clear number two. It was a big decline compared with the predicted 31-36 seats to be garnered by the anti-Islam party in a poll late December.

GroenLinks, the Green Left party of the 30-year-old rising political star Jesse Klaver, suffered a minor decline compared to last Sunday, from 16-18 seats to 15-17 seats.

Right wing populist parties Forum voor Democratie (0-2 seats) and VNL (0-1) and left wing migrant party DENK (0-2) could also capture a seat in parliament.
