U.S. drone strike kills 5 militants in N. Afghanistan

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, March 8 (Xinhua) -- At least five Taliban militants were killed after a U.S. unmanned plane struck a Taliban position in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province overnight, a local official said Wednesday.

"The drone strike targeted a militants' hideout in Daftani locality, Dasht-e-Archi district at midnight. two vehicles together with the militants' bunker were also destroyed by the air raid attack," district Governor Nasruddin Nazari told Xinhua.

No civilian was hurt following the strike in the district bordering Tajikistan, the governor added.

The Afghan security forces have beefed up security operations against militants recently as spring and summer known as fighting season is drawing near.

The NATO-led Resolute Support (RS) coalition forces use drones for reconnaissance missions and to attack militants in remote areas of the mountainous Central Asian country.

On Saturday night, 18 Taliban militants, including a Taliban shadow district governor, were killed after Afghan air force struck a Taliban position in neighboring Imam Sahib district.

The Taliban militant group has yet to make comments.
